Mission Statement:
To embrace with joy and courage the call of Jesus in today's world - peacefully, simply, and together.

Vision Statement:
With a spirit of love, respect, honesty and cooperation, we strive to embrace another way of living in Christ with:

  • transforming worship that reflects the inclusive and challenging nature of the teachings of Jesus,
  • thought-provoking study that enlivens each member's Christian journey,
  • humble service to the sacred in all God's creation,
  • mindful witness to peace and social justice, and
  • a loving invitation for all people to celebrate with us in the circle of God's community.

We are an intentionally progressive Christian community seeking to live out the teachings of Jesus in a contemporary university setting peacefully, simply and together.

We seek to meet Jesus in the faces of those around us as we consider how his powerful life can speak to this time and place. We are not afraid of the hard questions of life however we respect the possibility that God will give us different answers. Thus we agree to disagree, but not to be disagreeable. We are Christians, but we do not believe that we have a “corner” on God.

We place worship at the center of our community, finding this time of song, silence, scripture, spoken word and prayer to enliven our faith and challenge our view of the world. We stand in a tradition that loves to sing, and we include both traditional as well as contemporary music in our worship. When speaking of God and human beings, we attempt to use language that is as inclusive as possible.

Although we come from many different faith traditions, we are affiliated with the Church of the Brethren, a Protestant denomination in the free church tradition and one of the three historic peace churches in America . We operate in a democratic fashion, preferring consensus to Robert’s Rules of Order. We elect a Leadership Team who guides the program and vision of our congregation.

We follow the Brethren tradition of service to both the local community and the world. We intentionally commit ten percent of all we receive through offerings to others in need through the work of community organizations, our Virlina district and our denomination. We often engage in hands on ministry, working on disaster relief projects of the Church of the Brethren, volunteering at the local Interfaith Food Pantry, the Montgomery Country Christmas Store, participating in CROP Walk and giving witness to our belief in peace through a variety of activities. We are very active in ecumenical work, hoping for the time when the church will be one in the spirit.

While we believe the church is the people, not the building, we have been the recipients of a beautiful contemporary church building constructed with much volunteer labor from generous members of the Church of the Brethren. Due to this wonderful gift of time and talent, we rejoice that our building is debt free. Believing that it is not good stewardship for churches to sit empty much of the time, we shared our space with Carousel Learning Center for many years, and now share our space with the Virginia Interfaith Child Care Center (VICCC).

Like any family, we celebrate that we are a group of many ages, from infant through college student to those who are retired and have enjoyed welcoming participants from all over the globe over the years. We strive for a balanced life together of worship, study, community, witness and service.

As we continue the work of Jesus, peacefully, simply and together, it is our intention to always be respectful of one another and grateful for the gifts, talents and perspective each one brings.

In our circle, there is room for you.

Come and be a part of the community!
